CBC showed back to back “Christmas Classics” tonight — “Frosty the Snowman”, followed by its apparent successor “Frosty Returns”. The former is a classic, having been on the air for almost 40 years, and something I remember watching Way Back When. However this sequel I have never had the privilege of watching before today. A badly drawn snow melting corporate suit as a villain? Environmental pollution concerns? That was thirty festive minutes I will never get back — sadly this show will be branded a classic by virtue of the fact that it will air every year on tv as Christmas Filler for the next 40 years, however there is nothing about it that stands out as a holiday treasure like its predecessor. Even the Spongebob Squarepants Christmas Special holds up well enough to show that new content can go down as something worth watching annually.

If I had a magic hat, it would erase “Frosty Returns” from the archives.

I saw a girl, stopped at a red light, dusting the inside of her car.  She caught me laughing.

They didn’t win the Stanley Cup, but still had one of the greatest seasons in a long time.  I think I saw more wins this season than I even have in the past.  The team’s improbable playoff win was so amazing: knocking off the first place Wings, coming back from a 2-0 defecit against San Jose, dealing with the flu against Anaheim, recording the first ever shootout goal in playoff finals history, recording the first ever overtime shorthanded goal in finals history, losing their star goalie due to injury, and still making it to a Stanley Cup Game Seven takes a lot.  And its been the most fun time following it.  With a lot of favourite players on this team, I hope it sticks together over the summer, and that there is more to see from them next year.

It was unusual to still be following hockey at this time of year, when attention usually turns to football and the Eskimos.  But, now that the rain has subsided, I think its time to head outside and continue the fun that this summer has started off with.
